The date(s) over a weekend are set for OCTOBER 2014 See our own page explaining what they are & whether you wish to attend as a family HERE ..if you don't want to attend you still receive your badges earnt. i.Achieve - Top Awards… 2014 When: 11/10/14 & 12/10/14 (Daytime sessions - approx 1½ - 2 hours) Where: Comberton Village College, Comberton, Cambridge To recognise the successes and achievements of young people in Cambridgeshire gaining top awards as they progress through Scouting, we will be hosting the “i.Achieve - Top Awards…event, at Comberton Village College (Cambridge), over the weekend of 11th/12th October 2014. This event will be youth led, run by adults and young people from the Youth Involvement (YIPEE!) team within the County. It is open to all youth members who have gained any of the following youth awards, from 1st January 2013 to 31st August 2014: Chief Scout’s Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond awards; DofE Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. It will also be a chance for families and local scout Groups & Districts to join in celebrating the achievements of their young people. Further details of how to register award recipients online will be available shortly. Keep a check on ShoutOut! and the County website for the latest information on this event. By Izzy M. (NB. Grafham water is not affiliated with 1stRamsey scouting) use the search box to find more on "Grafham" 9.30am -5.30pm but get there really early to park up (8.30a.m) and beat the queues (then you can start the cheap taster sessions straight away). There is NO pre-booking! You have to sign up & pay for the courses you wish to do (they are all close together so not hard to dart from one to the other). Well worth doing, it has proven incredibly popular & is a fantastic chance to have a cheap day of adventuring with your family or with them watching... & a perfect opportunity to get a badge or two started (or completed). children 5 & under were free in 2013, but do check with Grafham before you go! NOTE It's not clear whether this will be a one off this year or carry on as before, ...I was typically doing 6 activities (with some repeats for the ones she really enjoyed) ..dry activities in the morning wet activities in the afternoon (for example) as you don't want to keep getting changed, may as well get wet (ish) for just one part of the day. If the weather is looking good it's definitely worth taking a picnic or a portable barbecue, plenty of space to play along with raised seating & tables on the decking accessing the main building. Archery, climbing, high ropes, blind trust trail, Canadian Kayaks (the open Indian style canoes), Power-boating, sailing, ... & more indoor rock-wall climbing are all achievable in a day & many count toward BADGES! It is typically a fantastic family day, & had a barbecue (£2.50 in 2013) & endless cups of tea for 50p (with free re-fills). It was a bargain day out (free-parking too) & will be happening again in a few weeks time, it would be good to see some more Beavers & cubs there hopefully. Even if you only wanted to do a few things or just to get some fresh air with the family dog, on your bike or a walk, Grafham is super fun to go to on a warm day. As a result of last year I'm now doing archery as a hobby, (we haven't got room for another speedboat on the drive)! I'd never climbed before last year in a harness & rope, it can be a bit scarey at first BUT it's great fun seeing just how far you can get knowing it's safe to go high & aim for the top of the platform, it challenges you , might scare you (a bit) whilst you get your head into adventure mode ..& then you are really proud of what you can achieve! Why not take a look at a badge page (click the badge you are interested in & it will open a link with what you need to do to earn it)! Suggested as achievable for Beavers... Suggested as easily achievable for Cubs... (below) If you are nearly ready to move on into Cubs or up to Scouts then you can't unless you have all your Challenge badges, in order to earn your Bronze or silver badge, so a day at Grafham can really help speed you up on your badge requirements whilst having a whole lot of cheap fun! Talk to your leader about what you can do to earn your badges they will have some advice & might be able to help you with what you can work towards. You will sleep like a log afterwards, don't forget to take some "wet-shoes" or a spare pair of trainers in case you want to do water activities or just dip your toes in the water to cool off under adult supervision.
There are drink & snack machines at Grafham, all taster sessions are by the Grafham team (all qualified instructors) ..this is not a Scouting endorsed event but is very worthwhile going to for a great day out & we highly recommend it! Hope to see you there. COMET ISON FACTS:
As we live in an area where you don't have to drive far to lose the glow of streetlights we might have a really good chance at seeing it even if it isn't as bright as hoped Subject: Top Awards (very little information available) so I have summarised the event, so you may make an informed choice... in times of expensive travel & possibly inclement weather. this year cost of a typical return trip from Ramsey was in excess of £13 petrol. & 30+ miles in each direction. (based on google map route & petrol estimation, correct at time of publishing). For 2013 it was amidst the worst of the winter snow weather making the journey "possibly" questionable according to travel conditions. The event is held annually in most, if not all districts & is not unique to Cambridgeshire. "The Top-Awards" pertaining directly to 1st Ramsey groups age range are basically the handing out of your child's Bronze / Silver awards by a special guest such as one of the Queens Lord Lieutenants as they move from Beavers to Cubs, Cubs to Scouts etc.. It is a weekend afternoon typically alongside many hundreds of other Beavers & Cubs awaiting your turn to go to the rostrum to receive a commemerative woggle, badge & certificate, this year it was a trek around Cambridge (To Comberton college based on the outskirts of the city). for over 470 youth members of Cambridgeshire Scouting who attended the i-Achieve awards event in Comberton. This event was hosted by Liz Craig, County Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and H.M’s Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Hugh Dublerly Esq, CBE on the weekend of 19th/20th January. Please Note: the "Top Awards" are acknowledged by r.s.v.p. booking your place at an event. Your Beaver or Cub will have already received their badge via Akela on a pack meeting night, therefore attendance is non essential & no pressure should be felt to attend. Those who do not attend should typically have their certificate passed on after the event to the troop, the leather woggle is only made available to those who attend the event. (if a leather woggle is of concern to you, similar woggles may be purchased via scouting shops, scouting websites, & ebay from as little as 50 pence, there are many different styles both sober & fun to select from). East of England Agricultural Society invites Beaver and Cub groups to our ‘out of the classroom’ learning experience all about identifying our garden birds, building a bird box, making bird food and lots more here at the East of England Showground from 10.00am to 12.30 pm on Saturday 25th January 2014. Places are limited to 200 children.

Our menus are seasonal to make the most out of the seasonal and regional fresh produce. To assist young people in selecting a balanced meal we serve generous portions of fruit, vegetables and salad with plenty of carbohydrate for energy. Alongside our suppliers we actively work to reduce the fat, salt and sugar levels of our food against target specifications set by the Food Standards Agency. Whilst monitoring these levels we also work to minimise and eliminate, where possible, the use of additives and are continually working towards the removal of trans-fats from within our range of products. Fat content is kept to a minimum by choosing low-fat or lean ingredients where possible and using low-fat cooking methods. Our focus is on: - Availability of fresh fruit with all meals – whole and prepared for convenience - Availability of healthy and nutritional salad bar at lunch and dinner time - At least one hot fresh vegetable will be served each day - Availability of vegetarian freshly homemade soups for lunch and dinner - Reduction of sodium salt - Reduction in fats (particularly trans and saturated fats) - Reduction in added sugars - Encourageing fibre rich foods In addition: Water is available with all meals Squash is available on request Semi-skimmed milk is available with breakfast We have a network of suppliers that are continuously reviewing and who actively work to reduce the food miles. And finally… It is a matter of pride and principle that no child leaves a PGL dining room hungry! Whether members of your group have specific dietary needs relating maybe to medical or religious requirements or whether it’s simply a matter of being a fussy eater, we make every possible effort to meet their needs. We always welcome your comments and would be delighted to discuss any aspect of our catering with you. Enjoy your meals at PGL! PERRY HUNTINGDON CAMBRIDGESHIRE PE28 0GW Grafham site link Grafham frequently asked questions... This is a great opportunity (especially for cubs to gain their Water activities badge over a few sample sessions, & who knows, we may have budding sailors amongst us! For Beavers Grafham is a great place to explore the woodland, visit bird hides, fly a kite (it's often windy up over there) ride your bike around grafham water's tracks & much more. Fun Run (not a race) Sunday 9th june 2013 @Ramsey Rural Museum! ..(see the poster below) in partnership with Ramsey Rotary club, raising funds for LOCAL causes within the community (such as us). Grab your sponsor forms & raise us some cash (please) in order that we can raise more funds to put towards our next phase of renovations...
Every pound you raise could actually be worth £7 to us ..(can there be a better incentive to raise some cash)!? So if you were able to achieve & collect £15.00 in sponsorship this could be worth a whopping £105 toward our hut renovation fund. After we've tidied up the inside for use by Scouting, the toddler Group & Sunday school ..in better more up to date facilities, we wish to push on with further improvements for the benefit of the wider community (as well as making a nicer place for our Cub & Beaver packs)! We need to keep fundraising to achieve this (& funds have come to a standstill) ..so grab your Isotonic drink & put your best foot forward to keep the pack on it's feet & get fit at the same time. One pack member managed to raise an incredible £200+ doing this event in 2012 ..the course is only a few miles long with up to 3 laps being able to be completed within a safe, marshalled environment! So come on, join in the fun & do your bit for LOCAL scouting & OUR community! By Web Admin (& Izzy M.) Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic project which has seen hundreds of farmers across the UK opening up their farm for one Sunday each year since 2006! It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer. Take time to listen to the birds, soak up the scenery, experience the smells of the farmyard and really get in touch with the land that feeds us. So come and feed your senses on Open Farm Sunday. Each event is unique with its own activities - based around the farm’s own individual story. Activities during the day may include a farm walk, nature trail, tractor and trailer rides, pond dipping, activities for children, a mini farmers market or picnics. The pictures link to take you to different sites, so if you wan't to know about Better food produced by British farmers, you might want to click the "red tractor! picture, or watch the video below. If you wan't to know which farms you can visit locally click either of the open farm links.. "Last year we went to 2 farms, one with goats, horses & rare breeds in Hilton, a baby Highland cow (calf) had been born in the field 30 minutes before we got there & it's proud dad was watching over mum & baby... which we were able to see really well on board the trailer ride, even the farmer didn't know it had happened he was just as surprised as we were! We learnt what was living in the hedgerows that farmers plant & maintain, some were hundreds of years old, got to see the horses, ponies from their riding school ...& the friendly, licky, climbing goats with whose milk they make delicious ice cream from! (I tried some of that too) ..as well as ducks & other animals, it was a fun & very popular visit. He told us that the kept a few rare breeds & that this was common amongst a lot of farmers in case there is an outbreak of a nasty disease in one area some of the animals are miles away & can be used to make sure the breeds aren't wiped out by things like "foot & mouth" At each farm we used a "dip bath" for our wellingtons, this is disinfectant to keep germs away from the animals that we may bring in, we used it on our way out too, it was like a spongey funfair floor disinfectant filled mat you walked across to clean your footwear! Then we made our way to Wimpole hall "Home farm" & spent the afternoon there for free as well ....as it's a special farm tour day you get to see all-sorts, speak to the farmers & visit or even feed the animals, try out a tractor, climb into the seat of a massive combine & learn more about British farms supplying food & materials which we use each & every day. It was a good but tiring day...I slept well after all that fresh air & cannot wait to go again" Izzy M. (cub scout 1st Ramsey group) Izzy Recommends: visit Grafham 27/05/13 ((bank holiday in 3 weeks)) ...for cheap fun ..& badgework8/5/2013 Me, on the "big bad rock wall" By Izzy M. (NB. Grafham water is not affiliated with 1stRamsey scouting) Hope you had a good Bank holiday!? ..I certainly did, we went to Grafham Water in the morning & booked in for Archery, climbing, high ropes, blind trust trail, Canadian Kayaks (the open Indian style canoes), Power-boating, sailing, ... & more indoor rock-wall climbing! My dad made us leave early so that we could sign up before all the places went & that way i could do dry activities first then get wet afterwards.. It was a great day, they had a barbecue (£2.50) & endless cups of tea for 50p (with free re-fills). I'm thinking of taking up archery as a hobby with my Mum & will be going back in a few weeks to tackle & BEAT that climbing wall again, I kept making the mistake of looking down (only ever look up at your next hold). I'd never climbed before in a harness & rope, it can be a bit scarey at first BUT it's great fun seeing just how far you can get knowing it's safe to go high & aim for the top of the platform, it challenges you , might scare you (a bit) whilst you get your head into adventure mode ..& then you are really proud of what you can achieve! Hopefully the activities I did day count towards another badge! ..because you CAN do them outside of cubs! Why not take a look at a badge page (click the badge you are interested in & it will open a link with what you need to do to earn it)! I need longer arms cos i'm running out of space on my uniform! AGM A meeting of collective minds & volunteer super-heroes, ...feel free to join us County AGM 2013 The Annual General Meeting of Cambridgeshire County Scout Council (CSC) will take place on Wednesday 19th June 2013 in the Conference Suite at Hinchingbrooke County Park, Huntingdon. The meeting will commence at 7.00 pm. A draft agenda for the statutory part of the proceedings is viewable via the link. This year the meeting is being organised by the young people in Scouting, and will be a celebration of Cambridgeshire Scouting. The AGM is open to all members of Cambridgeshire Scouting, but only the members of the CSC can vote in the statutory part of the meeting. If you would like to attend then please contact John Holme, the County Chairman who will ensure that you are added to the list of attendees for parking permits etc. Full details of this nearby event HERE Please take a moment to sign up to our twitter feed on your computers & phones... The site is enabled for display on tablets, I-phone's & android devices. The twitter feeds purpose is to update you (parents & carers) as to new material, information, maps, reminders & requirements... so it's a good resource to have for the common sense of "Being Prepared" By linking into twitter you'll also be able to lay your hands on details that possibly change due to unforseen circumstances (remember the st ives camp washout last year!? (for example) it also means you have your pack leaders contact details to hand, as well as the opportunity to enter a few competitions or take advantage of forthcoming events within the locality that you may not otherwise hear about (such as the recent grafham water post). Whatever reason you sign up for it helps get the message(s) out there in a timely manner ..so please do join us & help justify the websites upkeep! (you could also let US know of special deals & places of interest that may be worth sharing amongst the pack too)! Next week, & possibly for a few weeks overall we will not be meeting @ the scout hut! This is due to work in progress on the Hut to achieve the next stage of renovations. We need to leave Mr Merrel (our builder) to carry on his work (which some of you may have noticed. We shall therefore be meeting at the Ramsey 1940's site until further notice (you will need to allow an extra few minutes for drop off & pick up via the road barrier so please be prompt to ensure no-one is stuck inside or outside the gate! We'll let you know when we meet again at our newly improved Hut as soon as we know ourselves. Whereas in previous years Cubs & Beavers have attended service & participated in a short parade this year it is merely parade! NOT church service.
We meet: IN FULL UNIFORM. Where: Great whyte (clocktower road) for a through town procession. When: 2pm meet, for procession at 2.30pm Route: from town to Abbey Green We will be finished by approximately 4pm. Thankyou. APRIL 21st (Sunday) CUBS & BEAVERS, St Georges day parade ...iron your neckerchief, polish your shoes & comb your hair as Ramsey Beavers & Cubs "represent" youth within the community. Please pop it in your diary.. more precise time (start & finish) details as to meet up times to be confirmed shortly (normally we meet up just within the Abbey gatehouse area) ready to parade 100 metres or so to the church for a short service, complete with scouting flags & with other groups local to Ramsey. We don't do a regular church parade service, however Saint George is also based heavily upon BP's own ideas behind the scouting movement, so it has strong ties within the scouting community, as well as being a renowned English saint representative of England, ...therefore attendance is expected of all Cubs & Beavers please. Just to remind you all that it's still Easter Holidays ..so no meeting this Wednesday 10th April. Hopefully hut renovations are also underway, if so please do be especially aware of tools & materials which may be around due to space restrictions in the meantime! Thankyou for your understanding as we try to improve the HQ & it's facilities. SUNDAY MARCH 24th 2013 CUBS, AIR activities

Part of our policy of keeping costs down is to try cheap proven "Belt & Braces" maintenance methods (as well as us being cash strapped) Is to make the best of what we've got (in true scouting spirit). Having walked past the Scout Hut hundreds of times we didn't realise we hadn't got gutters & downpipes either! Part of our rising damp problem has hopefully been sorted, via a combination of work party investigation to establish the non connected drain, the singular "human digging machine" assistance of a wonderful parent, & some inevitable spending to get the problem sorted properly £300 ...money essentially from our own fundraising by both Cubs & Beavers. One of the next things we can do to help ourselves is to have some vandal resistant guttering connected, (£££) allowing the brickwork to dry out & become stable again, (there appears to be a concreted over drain to connect to (see immediate left of the lamp-post in the picture). Brickwork air dries in good weather by about 1 inch per month, ..& last summer, well you remember that wash-out we presume!? Which brings us to the point of the proposed work party, under discussion is the use of the often proven Thompsons water seal (applied by paintbrush) to help keep further water out around the frontage of the toilet area (as per the picture, small right hand window, newer building adjoining the main hall, & around the corner along the window outside our cramped kitchenette. Several applications will be necessary, but as brick is porus (soaks up liquid) it's easy to push in a few coats with old paintbrushes... We will require the use of a few stepladders to reach & make good higher areas, but with the majority within easy reach should not present a problem. So can we ask a handful of parents & carers to step forward & assist Leaders & committee members? Tea, coffee & bacon butties will be plentiful to keep us motivated. Please see the sign up sheet, it'd be great to see some new faces to engage with. By sorting this problem with the hut we will be one step further to securing the building for future use & moving towards our goal of making use of the outdoor area, so this will be another step forward. SO, how many sugars in your tea? & do you like your bacon extra crispy? See Judith or Dale to let them know you may be able to spare a few hours with us. Hope we can count on you when the weather improves! Please remember the Hut is used by our Beavers & Cub packs, as well as twice weekly sessions by the toddler group, & Sunday school, improvements & maintenance will go to KEEPING this building a community accessible building for years to come ..& hopefully open up the prospects of more groups wishing to use it! Originally posted for half term feb 2013, we have brought this piece forward to assist with information for our visit to duxford in march.... http://www.tpyf.com/upload/pdf/CubsAirActivitiesBadge.pdf click the picture above to go straight to IWM Duxfords website... As a prominent cub visit in 2013 (& a fine opportunity to earn a badge)! Duxford needn't be thought of as an expensive day out! ..why? because children under 16 years old GO FREE! (on normal non flying display days)..2013 regular day entry is £17.50 (so why not get together with friends for a Duxford day out whilst some of the adults enjoy time off in Cambridge? Duxford has oodles of planes, tanks, ships, & a special american u.s.a.f. hangar dedicated to our visiting forces, ...lots to see so start the day early! It's not just tanks, shipsn' planes ..Duxford's location was very important to turning the tide of the second world war from aerial attack, providing lots of cover to exhausted southern based crews, even back then Duxford (as a home for fighter planes) could cover bombing raids or defend against attacks on London & the south coast, in a fast plane such as the Spitfire & Hurricanes they were able to be everywhere at once. Lots of historic documents, film footage, photos & spoken word recollections of those who served from the 1st world war through to the Falklands conflict & more recent times. Definitely worth a few visits! ..especially on flying days or living history week-ends when it gets busy, ..but don't forget Ramsey has it's own special 1940's weekend including planes too, so make time for both if you can.
